Activity: Stiles Switch BBQ & Brew
10 Words or Less: You don’t need to drive to Lockhart for damn good BBQ.
Where: 6610 North Lamar
Cost: About $12-15 for a gigantic meal
You may have noticed a running theme in my restaurant reviews. Burgers, Korean BBQ, beef tartare… yes, I eat a LOT of meat. (And almost no fruit. It’s only a matter of time until I develop scurvy. Oh well.)
As a meat connoisseur, I have very strong feelings about barbecue. I could publish a guide to Austin barbecue, but since that’s been done, let me just tell you about a new favorite of mine: Stiles Switch.
I might be slightly biased, seeing as it’s a five-minute walk from my boyfriend’s apartment. But the meat is fantastic, they have Firestone Double Barrel Ale on tap, there’s outdoor seating, and they have the best crumbly ice EVER. (If you’ve ever been to Sonic, you know what kind of ice I’m talking about. So great to chew on. It’s the bane of dentists’ existence.)
What should you get? I’m a big fan of getting a three-meat plate and splitting it between two people, especially if it’s your first time. Don’t want to share? The beef ribs are awesome– in fact, they just won 3rd place in the BBQ Beef Rib Smackdown run by the Austin Chronicle.
And get the corn casserole while you’re at it. Looks suspicious, tastes delicious.
As a bonus, the owner is the nicest man in the world. The last time I was there, an old man came up after eating lunch to buy a drink to take out with him. The owner gave it to him for free and shook his hand. Adorable.
Stiles Switch is a chill place to eat barbecue, drink beer, and play washers. I’d recommend it to pretty much everyone except vegetarians.
- Like Chago’s, it’s closed on Monday.
- Their macaroni and cheese isn’t that good. I know, I’ve gotten it like three times just in case, but I’m always disappointed. I’d skip it.
- While in line, check out the photos on your right. The shopping center that now houses Stiles Switch played a prominent role in Dazed and Confused.
